我們在香港學英語，老師當然會著重文法和字句的結構，但在母語是英語的國家，他們反而不大著重文法，甚至連英文字的串法都不大講究，老師們把亂串英文字的情況叫作創意拼寫（creative
spelling）。結果是很多加拿大本地人、高學歷的同事所打的報告都錯字百出，他們會把They
are（They're）寫成Their，把You are（You're）寫成
Your。手機的『聯想拼寫』更把學生的拼寫能力進一步推低，學生不用記串法，因為手機自動提供選擇，所以有一半牛津大學的學生的基本拼寫能力都不合格。
還有是字句的結構，文化水平較低的人很多時都會用了雙重否定法（double
negative）而不自知，尤其是在電影上，我們經常會聽到一個無辜的人說：『I
didn't kill
nobody!』他想說：『我並沒有殺人』，卻說了：『我並沒有殺沒有人』，從文化和邏輯上便變成負負得正，即是『我殺了人！』（正確的英文文法是：I
didn’t kill anybody!）
但習非勝是，若果你指出他們的錯處，他們會說：『Who
cares！』這令我想起一首我改編自《不醉不會》的英文歌《Who cares!
